Samsung CLX-3175FW Wirelss Colour Laser Printer, copy, scan And Fax. 16ppm (mono),4ppm (colour) Print Speeds

Samsung CLX-3175FWcompact flexible and versatile5
We bought this to replace a good but ink-hungry HP PSC. So far I have nothing but praise for it. It is absurdly compact, prints quickly from “cold” and has good clear intuitive controls and panels that make basic copying/scanning/faxing functions a doddle. I went for the slightly more expensive option allowing totally wireless connection – there seems to be a little ambiguity on Amazon with prices – the same model is listed twice but once quite a bit cheaper – so do dig around. The wireless option means that we can put in on a wheeled 2 drawer filing cabinet and literally move it around within our relatively small office space. Of course you can also connect direct to the computer via a USB or via the network hub using ethernet cables. No the paper tray is not the biggest and no the toner cartridges are speced for “only” 1500 sheets but that’s why you are looking at a compact colour laser printer scanner. Sure initial set-up is a little tricky. Ignore the installation leaflet – utterly worthless if not confusing. Just install using ETHERNET cable and opting for network installation. That way computer allocates port automatically. You can check this by getting the printer to print out a page f setting which will include the printer port along the lines of 168.192.0.3. Make a note of that, then if still not printing manually configure printer port within control panel/printers “add new port” (if necessary). Likewise for scanner – if it doesn’t want to scan you can select “change port” and make sure it has the same ip address allocated as for the printer. Once everything is talking to everything else, disconnect the ethernet and within a few seconds the blue wireless enabled light comes on.

Beware of a couple of things not necessarily related to the PSC – I updated the firmware on my Netgear RangeMax wireless router and after that the wireless connection to the Samsung became unstable. Rolled back the firmware and it is fine again. Never bothered getting to the bottom of that issue. Also, happened to have a power cut in the house which meant when the system rebooted 2 hours later it had allocated a new isp address. This is the standard dynamic address allocation – you can make it “static” which means it will always allocate the same isp. No problem if its dynamic though – you just change the isp address through the same printer/scanner port dialogue boxes as above.

I’ve taken time to write this at some length because I do think this is an excellent bit of kit – not cheap but versatile and ideal for our small business/home office use.

Not the simplest to get running on a mac, but worth perservering4
I spent about two hours trying to get this working when I first received it from amazon.co.uk. Matters were complicated by the CD-ROM media which didn’t read properly on my mac, meaning I had to download the three installation files from Samsung). In the end, I called up the Samsung helpdesk and they were very helpful. In case its helpful to others, here’s a resume of what they said:

- The best way to get it working it would seem is not to try to plug it in to your computer directly via the Ethernet cable, but rather to connect it to the router in DHCP mode, then print off a network info to get the IP address of the printer. You can then access the printer via that IP address, turn the IP from DHCP to static (so you don’t have to keep assigning it every time you restart the router / computer, etc), and set up the wireless settings. Then you can remove the RJ45 ethernet lead and print wirelessly.

- Once you’re up and running wirelessly printing you might find th
at you cannot wirelessly scan to your mac. You need to go to your HD/Library/Application Support/Samsung/Scan Manager/ and run Scan to Pc, set the scan button, and also run “Scan to Mac”. I’m not sure why these applications aren’t put in the Applications folder when you install the software, rather than lurking, potentially undiscovered, in the Application Support folder.

Once you’ve done that, you can then scan remotely as well – either by “pulling” the scan from your mac, or by “pushing” it from the printer – pressing the button on the wireless printer scanner and then specifying the computer its to go to and the location. Its quite impressive for a unit of this price.

My main reasoning for buying a colour laser was the issues I was having with inkjet cartridges drying out after little use because I wasn’t printing frequently enough. The downside of a laser is the inability to print glossy photo quality prints – you can only use plain paper, so no photo prints. Print quality is generally fine, not going to win prizes, but for the price, no complaints.

The very best choice5
I have bought this machine to use in my house as I print and copy a lot for my work and university. I had read the reviews previously so I was a little bit afraid that I might have difficulties with connecting it to the network. However, I bought it because I have Samsung lightscribe cd burner, which is the first of three lightscribe burners that I bought, which actually works without any problem. Therefore, I trusted Samsung. On top of it the Samsung telly we bought provides a spectacular quality picture, so I thought I will give it a go and buy this Samsung All I One.
And I was not mistaken. The machine runs smoothly, provides all services of copying, printing, scanning and sending/receiving faxes. Without any problem.
As already mentioned by few people already, the best and easiest way to connect it to the network is to use the network cable provided with the machine, choose an entry in your network router ( In my netgear I have four and I picked the third slot), restart the Samsung All In One and give it a minute. Then print the report of your network configuration (In Samsung Menu choose network, enter, and find print). The report will show you what is your Samsung’s IP address. Knowing the number, type it into your pc (go to start, run, and then type: http://192.168.0.3 – this is my example, the number 3 at the end shows you where physically the network cable is at the moment in your router)
The automatic window will show up; go to network – wireless – wizard – and follow the instruction. As soon as you finish you can disconnect the cable from your Samsung, and there you go, everything is done.
Features of the machine I found handy – using the scanner from my pc, as it gives you lot of options instead of scanning and not knowing what it looks like straight away from Samsung (use Picassa, it is very simple, make sure you “import from” and choose Samsung)
- it is really quiet.
-the quality is very, very nice
-fax to email( or copy of faxed documents to your email)
One touch copy without using your pc, copy anything you need in your own house, you don’t have to run to the corner shop…

Overall, best choice.
